In addition to helping with the book drive, there are many ways the UB community can get involved to help out the library at Western NY Children’s Psychiatric Center. Here’s a list to get you started–keep in mind that any of these activities would be a big help for CPC AND would look great on a resume. If you are interested in tackling any of these projects, or have more ideas, or would like to visit CPC on ALA’s next trip to West Seneca on November 9, please email ubstudentala [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks for all your help–keep up the great work!

• Catalog materials (mainly copy cataloging using Access Pennsylvania records)
• Organize and re-alphabetize all sections
• Tag YA books with stickers and reinforcement tape
• Create a professional-looking brochure that can be distributed to community and other institutions when applying for grants and donations
• Create themed displays along with signage and booklists
• Compile booklists such as “If you like this, try this” and genre lists based on the collection
• Assist with researching and writing grants or looking into local organizations that might host a bookfair or purchase books and materials for the CPC
• Create a PowerPoint presentation on how to use SMARTboard technology in the classroom
• Develop library-centered activities and programming that can be implemented at the CPC

Some of these things can be done offsite, but please note that if you go to the CPC to do any activities you will be required to fill out a small amount of paperwork and a confidentiality agreement. If you decide to come back or will be working directly with the students, you will then have to undergo an extensive background check and orientation training.

For SLMS students, time spent at CPC can sometimes be counted toward your Field Experience hours–check with your advisor. Also, some of the background check paperwork you fill out is mandatory paperwork that you will need to have on file with the state to work as an SLMS anyway–you can get it on file through CPC.

The ALA Bake Sale was a great success and now we’ve got some money to spend! We’re going to go to the upcoming Clearfield Branch Library book sale and stock up on items for the WNY Children’s Psychiatric Center. Speaking of Wine & Cheese, the event is BYO drink (wine or whatever). ALA will provide cheese and other snacks. This isn’t a formal dress party or anything like that, just a chance to spend some time outside of classes with your colleagues. Rumor has it there may even be a fondue sighting! The Wine and Cheese Soiree is going to be 7pm next Friday, Nov. 6 at Elaine Dean’s apartment.  If you are interested in attending please RSVP to Elaine at ehdean at buffalo dot edu by Tuesday, Nov. 2nd.  Elaine will give directions to her house if needed when you RSVP.  Please bring your own wine/beverage.

The next UB-ALA meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 6:00 p.m. in 553 Baldy.

UB Student ALA is proud to announce a Book and Bake Sale on Thursday, October 29 from 9am-5pm in the Baldy Hall lobby, near the elevators.

All baked goods will be $1.00 and books will be 50 cents each or 3 for $1.00. Come on down for a snack break and feed your brain, too! All proceeds will go to purchase items for the WNY Children’s Psychiatric Center Library.

If you would like to contribue a homemade (or storebought, we’re not picky) treat for the sale, please email ubstudentala at gmail.com to let us know what you will be making. Please wrap all baked goods individually and follow good sanitary kitchen procedures–wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!

Thanks to the generosity of the UB and WNY communities, UB Student ALA’s  book drive to benefit the WNY Children’s Psychiatric Center is going really well. There has been a very positive response from WNYCPC and from UB and DLIS.

To recap, donation bins are available in the LIS lounge, 17 Baldy, and in the LIS office, 534 Baldy. We ask that you please do not leave donations in the hallway outside 17 Baldy unless they are clearly labeled as donations for the book drive, as without labels they might get thrown out.

WNYCPC does censor materials due to the needs of their residents, so if you are wondering if an item you would like to donate is appropriate, please email ubstudentala [at] gmail [dot] com. If you have a very large donation, or any questions at all, feel free to send us an email.

Hi everyone!

UB Student ALA is sponsoring a book drive to benefit Western NY Children’s Psychiatric Center. The kids at WNYCPC could really use updated materials, both fiction and non-fiction. Please place new or gently-used books appropriate for ages 4-18 in the marked donation box in the LIS student lounge, 17 Baldy (in the basement near the lab). Near that box is a list of suggested titles, if you are interested. The Center does censor some materials, so please no books about suicide, violence, etc. If you are wondering if an item you would like to donate is appropriate, you can email ubstudentala [at] gmail [dot] com. The donation box will be there for the remainder of the semester. There will also be a donation boxed placed in the DLIS office, 534 Baldy (it’s not there yet, but it will be.)

The meeting from the September 22nd meeting have been posted on the meeting minutes page and some of the highlights from the meeting include:

• The Linda Yalem run is this Sunday September 27, 2009  at 9:30 a.m. To register go to http://lindayalemrun.buffalo.edu/
• All library science students participating in the race are meeting Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the big bronze buffalo in front of the Center for the Arts and Alumni Arena so that we can run/walk together.  Everyone is welcome to participate or cheer us on!
• Pre-Race Dinner on Saturday, September 26, 2009 hosted by Elaine Dean for those participating in the race.  If you wish to attend the dinner please email an RSVP to ehdean at buffalo.edu  to receive directions and additional information.  The dinner will start at 6:00 p.m.
• UB-ALA is supporting a book donation to the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center in West Seneca, NY.  If you are interested in donating books, please watch for a donation box in the student lounge.  A list of acceptable materials will be forthcoming.  The donation box will be in the student lounge by next Tuesday the 29th of September and donations will be accepted throughout the semester.  All donations appreciated!
• The NYLA Conference is from October 14-17th, 2009.  If you are interested in carpooling please email ubstudentala at gmail.com.
