Month: August 2014
First things first, congratulations goes out to our new officers!
Secretary – Jen Hunt
Director of Social Media – Meredith Gaylo
Webmaster – George Tocco
Secondly, our first meeting was a rousing success! Pizza and pop were graciously provided by Dr. Julien and definitely did not go to waste. We discussed how we will be working with the other student groups to put on events throughout the year including Banned Books Week and Librarians Loud.
Our next meeting is scheduled for 6pm on Thursday Septermber 4th at 543 Baldy. This is especially for members who were not able to make the meeting last week.
Last but not least, the LIS-GSA scheduled a Happy Hour for Thursday September 25th so make sure to add that to your calendar! Look for more information here and on the LISTSERV in the weeks to follow.
Enjoy your holiday!!
The ALA is currently accepting applications from those who may be interested in serving on ALA and Council Committees for the 2015-2016 term. (Term starts on July 1st, 2015.) Serving on an ALA or Council committee provides members with leadership training, networking opportunities and experience in working on specific association topics.
The online committee volunteer form opens on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, and closes on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014. To volunteer, please complete and submit the form electronically (be sure to select “ALA” in the drop-down menu on the main form to volunteer for both ALA and Council committees).
Committee appointments will be finalized at the 2015 Midwinter Meeting and notifications will be sent out in early spring 2015.
This is an exciting opportunity that can greatly benefit your library career and help introduce you to new opportunities so you should apply today!
You can join the ALA and your state library association in one fell swoop, and for $3 less than the new price!
Those who register prior to September 1st will pay $35 instead of the usual $38 fee. Please click here or on the membership tab on the top of the page to be directed to the online membership form.
Dues for joining the ALA only will also go up on September 1st from $34 to $35, so sign up today!
Any questions or problems, please let me know.
My name is Jillian Hayes and I am this year’s president of the SUNY Buffalo ALA Student Chapter. I wanted to take a quick minute to introduce myself and let everyone know that I will be at the Welcome Reception on August 26th from 5:30-7pm in Baldy 553/555, along with the presidents of the other clubs (LIS-Graduate Student Association, Special Libraries Association, Public Library Association) in order to welcome new students and introduce ourselves and the clubs we represent. Returning students are also welcome and encouraged to attend and meet faculty and other students from the program.
I also wanted to take the time to welcome Gina Temperato as the vice president this year. In addition to her duties here, she is also the president of the SLA here at UB. We are still looking for those who may be interested in taking over the positions of secretary and treasurer for the upcoming year.
My hope is for members to submit blogs, ideas, reviews, jobs, and other content to our website and social media accounts. I will be working in the next few weeks to bring everything up to date so that we can reach more members, more often. Any questions or suggestions you may have, please direct them to me via email at either email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org
I am really looking forward to this year and hope that you are too!
